Every Believer Is Gifted

One of the greatest tragedies in the modern church is the number of believers who go through their entire Christian lives without ever discovering or operating in their spiritual gifts. The Apostle Paul wrote, "Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed" (1 Corinthians 12:1).

God does not want us ignorant about the gifts He has placed within us. These gifts are not trophies for the super-spiritual — they are tools for every believer to build the Kingdom of God.

What Are the Gifts of the Spirit?

The New Testament identifies several categories of spiritual gifts. In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul lists nine gifts often called the "manifestation gifts": wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment of spirits, tongues, and interpretation of tongues.

Romans 12 lists what are often called "motivational gifts": prophecy, service, teaching, exhortation, giving, leadership, and mercy. Ephesians 4 adds the "ministry gifts": apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers.

Together, these gifts paint a picture of a fully equipped, Spirit-empowered church.

How to Discover Your Gifts

Discovering your spiritual gifts is a journey, not a one-time event. Here are three practical steps:

Step 1: Ask God. James 1:5 says if you lack wisdom, ask God. The same applies to gifts. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal and activate the gifts He has placed in you.

Step 2: Serve. Gifts are often discovered in the context of service. Volunteer in your local church. Try different areas of ministry. Pay attention to where you feel most alive and where God seems to work most powerfully through you.

Step 3: Receive feedback. Others often see gifts in us before we see them in ourselves. Ask trusted spiritual leaders and friends what they observe in you.

Operating in Your Gifts

Discovering your gifts is only the beginning. Operating in them requires faith, practice, and accountability. Find a community where gifts are welcomed and exercised. Submit to spiritual oversight. And above all, remember that gifts are given for the benefit of others, not for personal glory.

As Peter wrote: "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms" (1 Peter 4:10).

Conclusion

You are gifted. You are called. And the church needs what God has placed inside you. Don't let another year pass without stepping into the fullness of your spiritual inheritance.
